Our Guide to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Abi Nursery, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – the government framework for learning, development, and care for children from birth to five years old.
Our curriculum is guided by Development Matters and rooted in best practice, ensuring every child receives the best possible start in life.

A Setting Designed Without Compromise

Abi Nursery is a fantastic new setting created to deliver the highest standards of early education and care – without the limitations often found in low-quality, adapted spaces. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed to support learning, wellbeing, and joy.

With over 10 years of experience specialising in caring for babies, we know exactly what helps the youngest children feel secure, happy, and ready to learn. This experience has shaped our Baby & Toddler Rooms, which feature calming colour schemes, natural textures, and state-of-the-art lighting that shifts from bright daylight for play to cosy settings for rest.

Our Main Nursery is thoughtfully divided into learning zones to inspire curiosity, concentration, and exploration across all seven areas of learning. Every space is airy, light-filled, and equipped with the highest-quality resources to spark curiosity and engagement.

A Garden Like No Other

We are proud  and lucky to be able to offer a large, purpose-designed outdoor space that few nurseries in the area can match. Our garden is not just a playground — it such an important extension of the classroom, a place for children to:

  • explore nature and the changing seasons
  • climb, run, and move freely
  • plant, nurture, and observe living things
  • develop a deep, lifelong love of the outdoors

We believe that fostering a connection with nature at this age builds curiosity, resilience, and wellbeing that will stay with children for life.

Our Principles

The EYFS is built on four key principles that guide our daily practice:

  1. Every child is unique – we value and nurture each child’s individuality.
  2. Positive relationships – our warm, caring practitioners create a sense of belonging and trust.
  3. Enabling environments – our indoor and outdoor spaces inspire exploration and learning.
  4. Learning and development – we support children’s progress across all areas of learning at their own pace.
How We Deliver the EYFS

We offer a balance of child-led exploration and adult-guided activities, following each child’s interests while introducing new skills and experiences. Learning is organised around the seven areas of learning:

Prime Areas
  • Communication & Language – developing listening, attention, and speaking skills through stories, songs, and conversations.
  • Physical Development – building coordination, strength, and healthy habits through active play.
  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development – encouraging confidence, independence, and positive relationships.
Specific Areas
  • Literacy – fostering a love of reading, storytelling, and early writing.
  • Mathematics – exploring numbers, patterns, and shapes in everyday play.
  • Understanding the World – learning about nature, communities, and the wider world.
  • Expressive Arts & Design – encouraging creativity through art, music, role play, and design.
Observing and Supporting Progress

Our practitioners regularly observe and record children’s learning, using Development Matters to guide next steps.

We share your child’s progress through:

  • Daily feedback at drop-off and pick-up
  • The Blossom App – where you receive photos, observations, and updates in real time, and can share your own comments, questions, and news from home for a two-way dialogue
  • Learning journals to celebrate your child’s journey
  • Regular progress reviews so we can plan together for the next stage of learning
Working in Partnership with Parents

We believe children thrive when parents and nursery work together. Your insight into your child’s interests and achievements is invaluable, and our use of the Blossom App makes this partnership open and a two way process.
